Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez Expresses Disappointment Over

Wisconsin Election Commission Decision In Assembly District 8 Complaint

October 2, 2026

MILWAUKEE, WI — State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez released the following statement today regarding the Wisconsin Elections Commission’s (WEC) decision to decline a criminal referral in the residency and election fraud complaint filed against Ismael Luna:

“The Wisconsin Elections Commission’s refusal to issue a criminal referral in the case of Ismael Luna is not just disappointing—it is a grave disservice to the integrity of our democracy. Although, I recognize the limited authority of the Wisconsin Elections Commission, I anticipate other authorities will continue with their investigations, concerning other issues related to this matter. Our electoral system stands or falls on

transparency, accountability, and the unwavering enforcement of our laws.

Without them, public trust in the democratic process erodes.

“This formal complaint was backed by compelling, documented evidence—property records and neighborhood testimony—that cast

serious doubt on Mr. Luna’s residency claims. The mandate that candidates legally and verifiably reside in the districts they seek to represent is not a bureaucratic detail; it is an essential safeguard of representative democracy.

“By declining to refer this matter for criminal investigation, the WEC sends a dangerous signal that Wisconsin's election and residency laws can be disregarded without consequence. This decision risks opening the door to manipulating statutory requirements and eroding the foundation of fair representation. Election integrity is not negotiable—when rules are bent, the voices of Assembly District 8’s legitimate residents are silenced, and our community’s trust is betrayed.

 “Despite my profound disagreement

with the Commission’s decision, my resolve to protect the people of Milwaukee and the sanctity of Wisconsin’s elections is stronger than ever. I will relentlessly fight for tougher oversight, unambiguous

statutory safeguards, and uncompromising enforcement—because the stakes for our democracy could not be higher.”

LIBRE Initiative Endorse Tom Tiffany: Wisconsin's Latino Families Deserve A Governor Who Will Fight for Them

Working families in Wisconsin are pushing harder than ever to get ahead. Groceries cost more at every trip to the store. Property tax bills keep climbing, even for families who have owned their homes for years. Owning a home in the first place feels further out of reach for young couples just starting out. And for anyone dreaming of opening a small business, the path forward means fighting through red tape before doors even open.

Latino families feel the impact of these affordability concerns every day. The LIBRE Initiative, the state’s largest center-right Latino organization, hears it from the nearly 450,000 Latinos across Wisconsin. Latinos are one of the fastest-growing communities in the state, and we’re powering neighborhoods, main streets, and local economies from Milwaukee to Green Bay. But rising costs and excessive regulations are getting in the way of the dreams our families are working so hard to achieve.

That’s why LIBRE has endorsed Tom Tiffany, the Republican congressman from Wisconsin's 7th District, for governor. LIBRE believes his agenda lines up with what Latino families in Milwaukee, Green Bay, Racine, Kenosha, and every community in between want: the freedom and opportunity to build their version of the American Dream.

Nowhere is that clearer than on property taxes. Gov. Tony Evers recently used his veto pen to lock in a 400-

year property tax hike — saddling not just Wisconsin homeowners today, but their children and grandchildren, with higher bills for generations. Tom Tiffany has pledged to end that hike and any other attempt to squeeze more out of Wisconsin homeowners already stretched thin. For Latino families working to buy their first home or hold onto the one they’ve built their lives in, that promise matters.

For too long, politicians in our state have either ignored us or downplayed the importance of Latino voters. They often talk about our community during election season and forget we exist the rest of the year. That’s not proper outreach, and Latino families deserve better than being treated as another voting bloc.

The good news is that this November, we have a real chance to change direction and vote for candidates who align with our values.

Wisconsin's 2026 race for governor is wide open for the first time in over a decade. Gov. Evers is stepping aside, and the next governor will set this state's direction for years to come. Tom Tiffany is offering exactly what Latino families are asking for: opportunity. And LIBRE is not waiting until right before November to show up. And LIBRE is not waiting until right before November to show up. LIBRE is already organizing door to door in Latino neighborhoods because this community deserves su-

stained engagement.

Every conversation is a chance to make sure Latino families know their voice and their vote carries real weight this year.

Wisconsin elections are often the most competitive in the country. A single point can determine who the next governor will be, and Latinos in this state could be the ultimate swing voters this year.

Cristy Garcia-Thomas Named President And CEO Of GMC

Board Elevates Long-time Milwaukee Executive From Interim President Role

August 28, 2026

MILWAUKEE – Cristy Garcia-Thomas has been named president and CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Committee (GMC), announced Friday morning by the GMC board of directors.

Garcia-Thomas was named interim president in December when Joel Brennan left his role as president to enter the race for governor of Wisconsin. She served as interim president for eight months.

“As the Board considered the organization's future, one priority remained clear: identifying the leader best positioned to build on the GMC's momentum and lead our work in the years ahead,” said Board Chair Dave

Anderson. “We appreciate the leadership and dedication that Joel brought to the organization. We also look forward to Cristy continuing to build on the momentum created over the past eight months reinforcing the

GMC's role as a trusted convener focused on improving the economic vitality and quality of life throughout the Milwaukee region.”

Garcia-Thomas said her priorities will include listening, learning, and building strong relationships with the GMC membership, outside partners, and the broader community.

“Transformational leadership begins with a clear vision, but it succeeds through collaboration,” Garcia-Thomas said. “It means bringing people together around common purpose, embracing innovation, making difficult decisions when necessary, and creating lasting impact that extends well beyond any one leader or organization. My goal is to help position Milwaukee not only

to respond to change, but to lead it.”

The GMC will continue to focus on four key strategic areas that include fiscal strength, education, infrastructure and public safety.

“I am excited to work alongside our members and partners to strengthen our economy, expand opportunity, and ensure that our region continues to be a place where businesses thrive, families succeed, and future generations choose to build their lives,” Garcia-Thomas said.

“Together, we have an opportunity not only to address today's challenges, but to define what Milwaukee can become over the next generation.”

Marquette Law Poll Finds Crowley Leading Tiffany Among Likely Voters
Tied Among All Registered Voters

Please note: Complete Poll results and methodology information can be found online at law.marquette.edu/poll

August 26, 2026

MILWAUKEE — A new Marquette Law School Poll of Wisconsin finds Democrat David Crowley leading Republican Tom Tiffany among likely voters by 49% to 44%, with 7% undecided. The race for governor, which will come to a head with the election on Nov. 3, is tied among all registered voters at 44% each, with 12% undecided.

This is Marquette’s first survey following the primary elections on Aug. 11.

Some of the gap between the results for likely and registered voters is due to a slight Democratic advantage in commitment to voting in November, with 84% of Democrats saying they are certain to vote. Among Republicans, 82% are certain they will vote, while 59% of independents say the same. (The group of “likely voters” in this release, as traditionally in the Marquette Law School Poll, consists of those who say they are certain to vote.)

Screen Shot 2026-08-26 at 5.47_edited.pn

At this stage of the campaign, an additional Democratic advantage among likely voters is greater Democratic Party loyalty in supporting the party’s nominee for governor, as well as support for Crowley among independents who are likely to vote. Likely voters among independents favor Crowley more than does the full registered-voter sample.

Screen Shot 2026-08-26 at 5.48.55 PM.png

Among likely Democratic voters, 98% say they will vote for Crowley, while 91% of likely Republican voters say they will vote for Tiffany. Likely independent voters prefer Crowley by 55% to 16% for Tiffany. In comparison, among all registered voters, Crowley wins 93% from Democrats, Tiffany wins 90% of Republicans, and Crowley leads among independents, 35% to 18%

for Tiffany.

David Carl Crowley is the seventh Executive of Milwaukee County since 2020. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously represented Wisconsin's 17th Assembly district, including the west side of Milwaukee, from 2017 to 2020.
Crowley is the first African American to serve as Milwaukee County's top official and the youngest person elected to the office, having taken office in May 2020 at age 33.

Thomas Patrick Tiffany is a member of the United States House of Representatives, he has represented Wisconsin's 7th congressional district since 2020.
Tiffany was the supervisor of the town of Little Rice, Wisconsin, from 2009 to 2013 and was elected to the Wisconsin State Senate in 2012.   Tiffany, a member of the Republican Party, has been rated the most conservative member of Wisconsin's congressional delegation.

El Rey Supermarkets, Global Power Components Donates $250,000
To Transform S. 51st & Stack Park

August 20, 2026

Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Alderman Peter Burgelis joined neighborhood residents and local business leaders on Thursday, August 20, at 12:15 p.m. to announce $250,000 in private donations to support the redevelopment of the City park at 51st Street and Stack Drive in Milwaukee's 11th Aldermanic District.

El Rey Supermarkets contributed $100,000, and Global Power Components contributed $150,000 toward the park redevelopment, providing a significant private-sector investment in a neighborhood park that has served area families for more than two decades. Representatives of both companies joined Alderman Burgelis, Mayor Johnson, and neighbors at the park for the announcement and ceremonial check presentations.

“This is what it looks like when Milwaukee businesses invested directly in the neighborhoods that helped make them successful,” Alderman Burgelis said. “A quarter-million-dollar investment helped us take an aging neighborhood park and create something that families can be proud of for another generation.

I am incredibly grateful to El Rey and Global Power Components for stepping up in such a big way for the neighborhood.”

Nelson Lang of El Rey said the company's $100,000 contribution reflected its longstanding connection to Milwaukee families and neighborhoods. “Milwaukee's neighborhoods and families have supported El Rey for generations, and we believed strongly in giving back to the community that has given so much to us,” Lang said. “We were proud to invest $100,000 in a place where children and families could come together, play, and build memories for years to come.”

Mike Watkinson of Global Power Components noted the company’s $150,000 gift represented an investment in both the neighborhood and the people who call it home. “Global Power Components was proud to call Milwaukee home, and we believed strong businesses and strong neighborhoods go hand in hand,” Watkinson said. “This $150,000 investment was about helping create a safe, welcoming, and lasting community space for the families who live and work here.”
Milwaukee City Parks is in the early phases of redeveloping the park at 51st and Stack as part of a community-led

PXL_20221108_205406957_1_edited.png

efforts to create a space that better reflects the identity and needs of the White Manor neighborhood, an area shaped by generations of immigrant families and evolving cultural traditions.

The park is one of the older sites in the Milwaukee City Parks system. Its playground has served neighborhood families for more than 20 years, and the equipment and amenities have aged considerably. The redevelopment provides an opportunity to reimagine the space with residents and create a modern neighborhood gathering place for the next generation.

The upcoming reinvestment offers an opportunity to renew the site while recognizing the neighborhood’s history and diversity.

While the area has access to several high-quality parks nearby, this project focuses on making 51st & Stack uniquely its own.

Ortiz-Velez Complaint

The southern portion of the 16th Street Bridge is now open to traffic following completion of the floor beam replacement that required the bridge to close in December 2025.

The entire 16th Street Bridge was closed to traffic in early December 2025 after an in-depth inspection identified one floor beam showing signs of accelerated wear compared to surrounding bridge elements. Due to the level of wear, the floor beam was determined to require immediate replacement.

Since December 2025, the project team has designed, fabricated and installed a new steel replacement beam for the 1929-built bridge. Repair work on the southern portion of the viaduct is now complete.

The southern portion of the viaduct

has also been restriped to one travel lane in each direction between W. Pierce and W. Canal streets. The new configuration right-sizes the number of travel lanes to better align with current traffic volumes.

With the work complete, the southern portion of 16th Street is now open to traffic and the project has returned to

 its original detour route.

Meanwhile, planned rehabilitation work on the northern portion of the 16th Street Bridge remains underway.

Crews are currently completing structural steel removals and repairs on the north and south trunnion towers.

Work on the full rehabilitation project is expected to continue into December 2026. Once the project is complete, 16th Street will reopen to all traffic.

State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez Files Formal Complaint Challenging Residency Validity Of Opponent Ismael Luna

MILWAUKEE, WI — The campaign for State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez announced the filing of a formal complaint with the state elections commission challenging the residency and ballot eligibility of challenger Ismael Luna. The complaint cites substantial evidence that Luna does not legally reside in the district he seeks to represent, in direct violation of state election laws.

While Luna claims to be a district resident, public property and tax records indicate otherwise. The complaint details that Luna currently owns two separate homes outside of the district's boundaries and maintains his primary, day-to-day residence at one of those out-of-district properties. Evidence suggests Luna obtained the address he is currently using within the district solely to run for public office, misleading voters about his ties to the community.

Furthermore, the Ortiz-Velez campaign raised alarm over the out-of-state financial interests backing Luna’s candidacy. Luna’s campaign has been heavily subsidized by what some are calling dark money organizations and special interest groups based in Washington, D.C., and New York.

Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez released the following statement regarding the complaint:

"The people of this district deserve a representative who actually lives in

our neighborhoods, shops at our local businesses, and understands the daily realities our families face.

Attempting to deceive voters by renting a paper address while living in a different district entirely is a fundamental breach of public trust. When you combine the residency with the flood of dark money pouring into his campaign from Washington, D.C., and New York, it becomes questable who Ismael Luna is actually working for—and it isn't us.   We are calling on the election commission to conduct a swift and thorough investigation to protect the integrity of our local elections."

The formal complaint requests an immediate review of Luna’s residency status, utility records, and property tax declarations to ensure compliance with the strict residency requirements mandated for state legislative candidates.

Representative Ortiz-Velez remains committed to fighting for her constituents' genuine, local interests and ensuring the district's voice in the  legislature  is  not bought by out-of-state dark money or manipulated

Milwaukee Leads

Milwaukee Leads: Ordinance Imposes The Maximum Penalties Permitted Under Wisconsin Law On Businesses That Sell Intoxicating Products To Minors

The Milwaukee Common Council today (Friday, July 31) adopted legislation introduced by Alderman Peter Burgelis and co-sponsored by Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, establishing the toughest penalties allowed under Wisconsin law for businesses that illegally sell alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, or intoxicating cannabinoid products to underage individuals.
The file was also co-sponsored by Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, Alderwoman Sharlen Moore, Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., Alderman José G. Pérez, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, Alderman DiAndre Jackson, and Alderwoman Andrea M. Pratt.

Depositphotos_42767345_XL.jpg

The ordinance raises Milwaukee’s forfeitures to the maximum amount permitted under state law, strengthening enforcement against retailers who violate age restrictions. It builds on last year's Common Council action prohibiting the sale of intoxicating hemp-derived THC products to anyone under the age of 21.

“Businesses that sell intoxicating products to children are choosing profits over our kids. That is unacceptable. Today, Milwaukee made it clear that those who break the law will face the strongest penalties Wisconsin allows. If you're willing to put children at risk, you should expect the maximum consequences,” said Ald. Burgelis.

Alderman Westmoreland added, “Our youth deserve adults who protect them, not ones who exploit them. Milwaukee is imposing the toughest penalties allowable under state law, but frankly, they should be even tougher. It is time for state lawmakers to strengthen the law so that anyone who profits from putting children at risk pays a much steeper price.”
The sponsors thanked their Common Council colleagues for supporting the ordinance and reaffirming their commitment to protecting Milwaukee's children through strong enforcement and responsible retail practices.

The ordinance now heads to Mayor Cavalier Johnson for his signature.

LIBRE Initiative-Wisconsin: Latino Organization Endorses Five State Legislative Candidates Ahead Of November Election

August 2, 2026

Milwaukee, WI — The LIBRE Initiative-Wisconsin, the state's largest center-right Latino organization, announced its endorsement of five candidates for the Wisconsin State Legislature, backing a slate of policy champions committed to expanding opportunity for families, small business owners, and working Wisconsinites across the state.

The endorsements come as Hispanic families in Wisconsin continue to feel the squeeze of high property taxes, rising energy bills, and a state economy that too often leaves entrepreneurs and working families behind. LIBRE's endorsed candidates have committed to advancing policies that make it easier to start a business, keep more of their hard-earned paychecks, and give every family the freedom to choose the education that best fits their children.

LIBRE Initiative-Wisconsin's endorsed candidates for the 2026

election include:

State Senate

  • Mike Roberts (Senate District 5)

  • Jim Croft (Senate District 21)

State Assembly

  • Bob Donovan (Assembly District 61)

  • Ben Franklin (Assembly District 88)

  • Bobby R. Lindsey (Assembly District 89)

"Wisconsin's Hispanic community believes in hard work, opportunity, and building a better future for the next generation. This November, we have the opportunity to elect state legislative leaders who share those values and will fight to protect them. That's why LIBRE is proud to endorse Mike Roberts, Jim Croft, Bob Donovan, Ben Franklin, and Bobby Lindsey. We're proud to stand with them, and we're ready to turn out Latino voters and deliver a win in November," said Anna Flores, LIBRE WI Strategic Director.

These endorsements land in districts anchored in some of Wisconsin's largest and fastest-growing Latino communities — from Milwaukee County (home to more than 153,000 Hispanic residents) to Racine County (14.1% Hispanic) and Brown County in the Green Bay area (nearly 10% Hispanic). Statewide, Wisconsin's Hispanic population has grown to more than 447,000 residents.

The LIBRE Initiative-Wisconsin, which works alongside Americans for Prosperity-Wisconsin, will mobilize its grassroots network of volunteers across the state to engage Hispanic voters ahead of the November election through door-knocking, community events, and voter education. LIBRE has also endorsed Tom Tiffany for governor.

Gala Anual

La Gala Anual De Becas De Augustine Prep Recauda $3.2 Millones
Para Apoyar A Los Estudiantes

March 2025

Defensores Y Líderes De La Ciudad Responden
A Los Planes De Inmigración De Trump

La Confusión Y Las Preocupaciones Están Creciendo En La Comunidad Hispana De Milwaukee

January 25, 2025
